The Digital Outreach Program

The North Callaway Digital Outreach Program refurbishes donated computers and provides them to those in need across the state and around the world.

Environmental Responsibility

Our technology-based culture comes with a price-tag—negative consequences for the environment. The solution: education and intervention. The Digital Outreach Program integrates computer science and environment awareness education with community responsibility. Students are empowered to take personal steps to protect the environment and are positioned to teach others in the community. In Missouri 2.25 million obsolete computers and televisions are discarded each year-- the source of 70% of all heavy metals found in landfills. Reclaiming discarded computers and electronics has an immediate positive impact on the environment, enriches the lives of those in need of computers, and reduces environmental health hazards.

Our History:

The Digital Outreach Program was born in the corner of a rural Missouri classroom in North Callaway County—a tiny county with less than 45,000 residents. There were no books, no tools, or software -just a dozen intrepid students repairing donated computers on borrowed tables. They were the first students of the Technical Problem Solving course, the core component of the North Callaway Digital Outreach Program. North Callaway students have DIVERTED MORE THAN 25 TONS OF E-WASTE in the last three years.

A Viable Alternative

The root cause of increasing e-waste is lack of education and community awareness. Most people don’t want to throw working computers away resulting in stockpiles of old computers stowed in garages, attics, and storerooms. Many people who need computers do not know how to access recycled computers.

The Digital Outreach Program gives students the abilities to refurbish and distribute computers diverted from landfills; while sending a message to the community about the dangers of e-waste and the benefits of reclaiming used computers.
